This collection consists of twenty-one audio cassettes documenting interviews, informal discussions, musical performances, and commentary recorded by Berea College students under the direction of history professor, Richard B. Drake, during the 1973 fall semester. Included are fourteen recorded interviews with transcripts. Subject areas include Pine Mountain Settlement School, John C. Campbell Folk School, the Christian Appalachian Project, the Civilian Conservation Corps in Pike County, Kentucky, and Berea College's Christmas Country Dance School. The musical material includes singing, dulcimer music, and commentary by Eastern Kentucky singer, Jean Ritchie and musical instrument craftsman, Homer Ledford.

Dr. Drake established Appalachian Notes in 1972-1973 as a quarterly publication that primarily featured book reviews and articles about Appalachia. He served as editor until 1979. Thomas Ford and Lawrence Thompson of the University of Kentucky both served as assistant editors during those years. Folksinger Jean Ruth Ritchie was born the youngest of 14 children on December 8, 1922, to Balis W. and Abigail Hall Ritchie in Viper, Perry County, Kentucky.
